4G-WiMAX Chips for Mobile Broadband

Beceem is the leading provider of chips for mobile/handheld/embedded products. Having delivered 4 generations of 4G-WiMAX chip solutions, and having defined all important 4G-WiMAX performance benchmarks (33 Mbps application layer throughput, hand-off below 50ms) Beceem’s BCSM250 has become the chip of choice around the world.

BCSM350/351 65nm Single-Chip Solution

The BCSM350 is a single-chip Mobile WiMAX solution comprised of a single-die WiMAX modem and a 128-Mbit Mobile DDR (MDDR) memory in a 353-ball LFBGA package. The BCSM351 is the bare die version of the BCSM350 that comprises a single-die WiMAX modem in a bump-die offering. The BCSM350 /351 device is designed to be compatible to IEEE 802.16e and WiMAX Release 1.0/1.5 networks.

The solution supports integration of dual-receive and transmit chains operating in a tightly coupled manner to deliver a cost-effective MIMO and beam-forming solution. The entire PHY, MAC, and RF functionality of a Mobile WiMAX terminal is implemented by this device. The baseband includes PHY, MAC, and host functionality and allows for software programmability. Both the PHY and MAC functionality are implemented using a combination of hardware and software to achieve an optimal balance between cost, power consumption, performance, and flexibility. Further, the advanced features implemented in this product increase throughput and indoor penetration performance for mobile applications. The radio transceiver includes two completely independent transmitters and receivers that cover the Broadband Wireless Access bands in 2.x GHz and 3.x GHz. Furthermore, the programmable channel bandwidth architecture allows support for virtually all of today’s WiMAX forum certification band classes.

The BCSM350/351 device also includes an on-chip 200-MHz MIPs 4K processor. This processor is intended for applications where the BCSM350/351 can off-load certain software functionality from its associated host such as the convergence sub-layer.

With its high level of integration, BCSM350 /351 represents a dramatic reduction in the number of external components required (BOM count) as compared to other existing solutions. Also, BCSM350 /351 is designed to work with number of third party front end module (FEM) suppliers to further simplify the design, decrease footprint and lower the cost.

BCSM250 65nm Single-Chip Solution

The Beceem Communications BCSM250 single-chip solution embeds all the necessary functions for a full-featured 4G-WiMAX/WiBro Wave 2 compliant mobile subscriber station based on the IEEE 802.16-2005 standard. Target applications for this device are embedded mobile 4G-WiMAX solutions in handsets, laptops, mobile internet devices (MIDs), and small form-factor PC accessories. All 4G-WiMAX functionalities are integrated into the BCSM250. This includes a dual-band (2-3 to 2.7Ghz and 3.3 to 3.6Ghz) 1 X 2 RF transceiver (single transmit chain and dual receive chains), the entire baseband (PHY/MAC), memory, all major host interfaces such as SDIO and USB PHY, and power management unit all in one 11 mm x 11 mm x 1.3 mm 292BGA package. Based on 65 nm process technology, the BCSM250 offers class-leading low power consumption up to 30% lower than the next best Wave 2 solution. Due to its high level of integration, the BCSM250 also represents a dramatic reduction in external BOM count over other existing solutions. The BCSM250 is also designed to work with a number of third party Front End Module (FEM) suppliers to further simplify design, lower costs and decrease footprint. In addition, the BCSM250 uses the same carrier-proven 4G-WiMAX protocol stack in the previous generation BCS200 solution thereby allowing customers guaranteeing optimal performance while reducing their product certification timeframes.

Products based on the BCSM250 have already been certified by Clearwire/XOHM, the WiMAX Forum, and are extensively tested for interoperability with major Base Station companies. A variety of BCSM250 based devices is being deployed by the world’s major 4G-WiMAX carriers in Q1 of 2009.
